Joey Chestnut is the greatest eater in the history of the world, this is not an opinion but a statement of fact. He owns more competitive eating records than any other athlete in history by a wide margin. However, despite is total domination, Joey didn’t find competitive eating… it found him.

Born on November 25th, 1983 in Vallejo, California he earned a degree in engineering and construction management from San Jose State University. He initially developed his talent for devouring large amounts of food when we would travel home to visit family during college. As the case with most college students, money was tight and nobody cooks like mom. His brother was the first to recognize is potential and signed Joey up his very first contest and Joey said, “A free hotel stay at a casino and all the lobster I can eat? Sure, I’ll give it shot.”

Even in his first contest, the 21 year old Joey began to transform on stage from a normally quiet and reserved person into the legendary eater we know today. Although he found it strange to eat as fast as you can on stage with people screaming at you, he had his family present cheering him on and he has never looked back since.

What is more American than a hot dog eating contest on the 4th of July? Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual event that takes place on Coney Island, New York. It’s a speed eating contest to see who can devour the most Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs in 10 minutes. Prior to 2007 it had been largely dominated by Japanese contestants until Joey claimed his first title in 2007 when he ended the reign of 6 time champion Takeru Koyayashi. Following his first victory Joey went on to become the most decorated champion of all time winning 10 out of the next 11 years.
